Musselshell Report 6/20-6/21 |
Lead | |
|
Hit up the Shell for a quick evening and morning fish this weekend with CATROOKIE. She was flowin pretty darn high but we got into the cats. Unfortunately
neither Catrookie nor I have invested in a scale yet so we do not know the precise weight of these nice ones.

We caught around 25 cats in all. Most were caught on cut bait (sucker or goldeye), but shrimp and minnows proudced as well. All fish were released. The average
size was somewhere between 10 and 15 pounds (just an estimate though).
Here is a better picture of the first photo, my biggest cat so far. I'm guessing he was easily over 15 lbs.

Holy %$@! man!! You went from catrookie to old pro! HA ha Nice Job! Ive been wondering how its been with the high water. We are still planning on going up
there this weekend but we'll see its a long drive and these gas prices are getting rediculous! It just jumped 17 cents a gallon yesterday! You better
invest in a scale man if your going to be fishing them Shell cats! Did you fish the south side of the hwy like I was saying did you go elsewhere? Anyway
nice job and keep the reports coming and way to CPR them hogs!

You guys just found out first hand about the greatest small river channel cat fishery in the world. Appreciate the fishing that you just had because it doesn't get much better than that. Awesome job guys! |

Thanks. We were originally planning on fishing by Mosby, but ended up going elsewhere. It is definitely hard to find access to that river. I think next time
I'll call up some ranchers and get permission. Hopefully I'll get back up there this month. I want to try to float it in my canoe and just beach it
when I find a good spot.
Oh and a guy living by the river told me he had caught 2 "blue catfish" out of the musselshell. I didnt think montana had blue catfish. Does anyone know anything about this? |

Yeah, it's funny how many people think they are catching blue cats in montana/wyoming just because the fish have a blue-ish tint to them. There aren't
any though, maybe back in the 1930's and before but even that is debatable. The way to easiest way to differentiate between the two species is by their
anal fin, rounded on a channel cat and straight on a blue.

We are headed up again for a couple days on friday. Maybe we'll see you up there Baharris. Hopefully the muddy spots in the road have dried up. The rivers
appears to have dropped since we were there last, but is leveling off again.

Yeah catrookie and I are hopefully gonna be heading for another fun weekend on the Musselshell like he said... I plan on getting a real scale first though so
we can see what kind of fish we've been catching, it's pretty hard to guesstimate for me as i've seen very few catfish.
