Calling this place rustic would be an understatement....Has anyone seen the hills have eyes? haha, j/k. There's no trees anywhere near that access, make sure to bring your own firewood and tarps to make shade. We had our lines in for 2 and 1/2 days hoping to catch some monster fort peck channels and maybe some big pike. Five minutes into casting her first line in, Denise lands a nice fat cat on live bait. Conditions were a crap shoot the first night due to steady rainfall up until about 7 AM. The second day we had our lines in the whole time and couldn't buy a bite....Until evening that is. We caught a few walleyes, drum, and carp-followed by a 6 # cat. We left cut drum meat on the lines overnight and woke to fish on three of four lines-the biggest 2 of the three days. The following day was no good.Again, the daytime bite was non-existant. Breakdown: 6, 2, 6.4, 9.1, 8.4 (cats most active feeding time- 12 am until 4:30 am) 5 cats in 2.5 days, not exactly what I call fast action. If I were to attack devils creek again I would for sure have a jet boat and fished the exposed stumpy area out in the middle of the lake. I think there are some huge cats to be caught in fort peck that are an untapped resource for MT catfisherman. I hope to see more posts from other members strictly targeting cats on the big lake. We had a great time, but don't think I will fish that spot again in the middle of summer. It was hella hot!!!!!! And no shade!!! All the cats that we caught were on my rod and I was nice enough to let doublehaul land a few. Oh, BTW I'm Denise. Doublehaul and I will be living in Billings from now on. Glad to be a part of Montana Cats.

Its nice to get cats in the big lake when your trying for them. I know if your like me once you know they are there, I always use bigger and bigger bait trying for that state reord! Ha ha It does look pretty desolate there! I love places like that but with no camper and no shade that sucks ass! Way to stick it out though and nice pics!

And were u off a point or back in the bays? we were fishing a grassy flat- I was hucking my bait out there as far as I could and couldn't have been in more than 5 ft of water. It was a little discouraging to know that there were probably better places (structurally) to be shorefihing, but like I said-I don't have a boat and wasn't about to run a prop in that section. There are miles and miles of shoreline to drive a fourwheeler down, but the f&G will give you a $275 ticket if caught running a motorized vehicle "offroad". There wasn't any real structure to speak of, and seemed like only grass and shale on the bottom. I also saw a number of times sturgeon up to four or five feet jumping clean out of the water in the bay we were fishing-it would be sweet to hook into one of those big dawgs.

A really good spot for numbers of small cats is right off the ramp at Devils Creek. If the wind is blowing from the north or west, small cats (the type that I like to eat) pile up right on the drop off in front of the ramp. I havent ever caught any big ones there though. You can run a prop all over there too, you have to watch out for logs but it isnt really that shallow. You can run up the lake a ways and then start getting into the delta. I have run all of that in my jet boat (actually all the way up to Ft. Benton), and it doesnt start getting tricky until 5-10 miles up from Devils Creek depending on water levels. Early summer has been the best time in there for me. My best bait by far in Ft. Peck has been the lowly night crawler, I have found that it out fishes cut bait 3 to 1 every time I have been out there. Cut bait may catch bigger fish, but it is hard for me to say.

It's a great place to catch those nice "eaters" 12-18 inches long. While fishing I mostly target large cats and have found that night crawlers mainly catch numbers over size. (except for the MT state record). Devils creek is a really cool area for the "hard core" fisherman. In the middle of summer it's hot as hell and there are no facilities. It's not exactly a family friendly destination. I had access to a prop boat, but didn't feel comfortable running it with all that debris floating in the lake.In addition to floating logs, there was a bunch of trees sticking 0ut of the water-I can only imagine the pigs that sit in and around those sunken trees in prespawn just waiting for bait to drift by. I'm financing a jet boat this spring and my 1st long trip of the spring will be a devils creek up to UL Bend adventure. I can't wait. Whats the easiest way to get to the UL BEnd? From Devils creek or drive downstream of Fred Robinson? I can't see my photos from this post. Anyone else just see a photobucket image?

The delta is super hairy in my opinion. It is wide open, unreadable flat water. Finding the channel is very difficult and if you were to run it up on a mud flat, you might be there for a while. The mud there is such that you likely wouldnt be able to get out of your boat without going in over your head. If you had a mud motor (go-devil, etc) it would be no problem as you would be able to push yourself through the mud. The best way to UL bend is going downstream from Kipp. The run is fairly straight forward, but there are some shallow spots that you have to look out for. It is about 45 miles one way. You can cut about 10 miles off of that if you launch at Rock Creek, but they ruined the ramp by putting softball sized river rocks on it last fall, it is difficult to pull all but the smallest boat out of the water there now. It may of changed since, but it was still in bad shape this spring.
